The Bozüyük City Museum occupies a historic mansion standing on a hill above the town, known locally simply as “the Lodge”. The building belonged to Colonel Çolak İbrahim Bey, a comrade-in-arms of Atatürk who also served as a member of parliament for Bilecik. He was the man who led the founding of the district's first factory in the Republican era.
The date of construction was long debated. Since the building does not appear in the footage shot during Atatürk's 1926 visit to the Bozüyük Timber Factory, it is thought to have been built between 1927 and 1930.
By the late 1980s the mansion had fallen into ruin, as no one was living in it. In the early 2000s the heirs donated it to the Municipality of Bozüyük. The roof was repaired first, to stop further damage to the walls; years later a thorough restoration turned it into the museum it is today. The building is registered as a historic monument by the Board for the Protection of Natural Assets and Monuments.
While the Lodge carries traces of early Republican civil architecture, it shows a distinct Balkan influence; this blending of styles is described in architecture as eclectic. The influence is thought to have been carried into inner Anatolia a century ago by the craftsmen and merchants who came from the Balkans for the timber trade.
Ten steps lead up to the building; this raised design also lets light and air into the basement. Inside, the rooms open onto a corridor rather than the traditional Ottoman hall — a trace of European domestic planning. The most striking feature is the windows: decorative surrounds and mouldings, divided panes and polygonal bays that widen and brighten the interior.
The museum brings together photographs and documents that shed light on the history of the district, along with various historic artefacts. Pieces are also displayed in the garden, where gazebos offer a place to sit. Thanks to its position on the hill, it is also a fine spot from which to look out over Bozüyük.
Admission is free. The museum is closed on Mondays and open from 09:00 to 17:00 on other days. Parking is available.
